We would like to congratulate our own Carson Harris on her completion of a Medical Coding and Billing course she has taken to improve herself and her work at Kelly Eye Center! Congratulations Carson...we are very proud of you!

We would also like to congratulate our technician, Rebecca Harshman on her completion of her COA (Certified Ophthalmic Assistant) course. This course required a complete year of learning and studying the field of Ophthalmology. It included specific topics such as cataracts, glaucoma, LASIK and refractive errors and also included a training course for assisting Dr. Kelly. We are very proud of you Rebecca...keep up the good work

Yes, I am an employee. However, what better testimonial than putting your eyes in the hands of the Doctor you work for?

From the time I was 11 years old, I had to wear glasses. My vision continued to get worse over the years and really could not function at all without wearing glasses or contacts.In April of 2006, Dr. Kelly performed Bilateral Implantable Collamer Lenses. I was one of his first patients to have this procedure performed. I have amazing vision now! I will never forget opening my eyes after surgery and being able to see everything clearly. Even after several years, I still get overwhelmed by how lucky I am to have such great vision.

KELLY EYE CENTER WANTS TO CONGRATULATE SUZANNE BRENNAN

Ms. Suzanne Brennan has been a part of the Kelly Eye Center team as an intern for the past 2.5 years. She has recently earned a HUGE APPLAUSE for her acceptance into The Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, TN for admittance in the fall of 2010!

Suzanne is an extraordinary young lady and has been a major part of the Kelly Eye Center team. She demonstrates a supreme level of professionalism and is complimented on her sincere and polite manner. Suzanne is an extremely hard worker and is dedicated to her education and success.

Suzanne plans to attend the 4 year program with particular interest in Pediatric/Vision Therapy Optometry. Although it will be a bittersweet moment when Suzanne takes the next step in her journey, the staff at Kelly Eye Center is here to cheer her through!

Candi has joined the Kelly Eye Center team as an accomplished professional who possesses qualities necessary for running a successful clinic. She has been recognized as an effective communicator, competent leader and successful team builder of 45 allied health professionals. She is skilled in management with special interest in team building, training, and developing standardized operating procedures.

Candi has extensive experience and training as well as JCAHO knowledge and compliance. She has worked with various eye care centers such as Duke and Kaz Vision and Laser.

She is a very proud mother of four children aging from 4-16 years old. Although her life is a busy one, she wouldn’t trade it for anything!

TRAVELING IN NORTH CAROLINA

Radio Station Collecting Water for ‘Operation Hydration’
Raleigh, NC – MIX 101.5 WRAL-FM will be collecting bottled water on Friday, May 22 between 6 am and 1 pm for ‘Operation Hydration’ which provides water for troops traveling through RDU Airport.

Donations of bottled water and monetary contributions can be dropped off at 5715 Glenwood Avenue, at the intersection of Glenwood Avenue and Fairhill Drive in Raleigh. MIX 101.5 will be broadcasting live during the collection encouraging people to stop by with their donation. Listeners can also donate online at wralfm.com.
‘Operation Hydration’ is being conducted by MIX 101.5 and the AT&T Pioneers. The bottled water will be distributed through the USO of North Carolina at the RDU Center. The RDU Center averages over 2,000 troops per month that use the services while traveling through RDU airport.

Its been a while...did you miss me???

I hope you had a wonderful holiday and that 2009 brings you LOTS of life adventures, wonderful health and to win the lotto! HA!

Well.....as some of you may know, we no longer perform our refractive procedures at TLC. Dr. Kelly is no longer affiliated with TLC....didnt know? Well, now you do :)

Anyway....we have had the pleasure of working with Dr. Dean Dornic's staff and their surgery center! Its nice to have such wonderful people to work with! We simply use their facility which is so nice and relaxing....you can even watch a movie while you wait...I love that! We even enjoyed Charlie and the Chocolate Factory just the other week! :)

So dont worry...we are still performing refractive procedures...same care, different surgery location.....and as always, we are dedicated to our patients and providing them with the upmost value of service!!

If you have Keratoconus, you know it! Im sure you are struggling with those annoying, and painful hard contacts that may or may not stay in place throughout the day....and the disease is probably getting progressively worse as years pass....

Well, Dr. Kelly is offering a procedure in the near future that will correct Keratoconus! Here is a little information for ya!

What is Keratoconus?

Keratoconus is a degenerative non-inflammatory disorder of the eye in which structural changes within the cornea cause it to thin and change to a more conical shape than its normal gradual curve. Keratoconus can cause substantial distortion of vision, with multiple images, streaking and sensitivity to light all often reported by the patient. Keratoconus is the most common dystrophy of the cornea, affecting around one person in a thousand, and it seems to occur in populations throughout the world, although some ethnic groups experience a greater prevalence than others. It is typically diagnosed in the patient's adolescent years and attains its most severe state in the twenties and thirties.

Keratoconus is a little-understood disease with an uncertain cause, and its progression following diagnosis is unpredictable. If afflicting both eyes, the deterioration in vision can affect the patient's ability to drive a car or read normal print. In most cases, corrective lenses are effective enough to allow the patient to continue to drive legally and likewise function normally. Further progression of the disease may require surgery including transplantation of the cornea. Despite its uncertainties, keratoconus can be successfully managed with a variety of clinical and surgical techniques, and often with little or no impairment to the patient's quality of life.

What are the symptoms of Keratoconus?

People with early keratoconus typically notice a minor blurring of their vision and come to their clinician seeking corrective lenses for reading or driving. At early stages, the symptoms of keratoconus may be no different from those of any other refractive defect of the eye. As the disease progresses, vision deteriorates, sometimes rapidly. Visual acuity becomes impaired at all distances, and night vision is often quite poor. Some individuals have vision in one eye that is markedly worse than that in the other eye. Some develop photophobia (sensitivity to bright light), eye strain from squinting in order to read, or itching in the eye.[6] There is however normally little or no sensation of pain.

The classic symptom of keratoconus is the perception of multiple 'ghost' images, known as monocular polyopia. This effect is most clearly seen with a high contrast field, such as a point of light on a dark background. Instead of seeing just one point, a person with keratoconus sees many images of the point, spread out in a chaotic pattern. This pattern does not typically change from day to day, but over time it often takes on new forms. Patients also commonly notice streaking and flaring distortion around light sources.

How can Keratoconus be treated?

Dr. Kelly is currently practicing Intacs with intent to perform the surgery on patients in the near future. Intacs for Keratoconus is a corneal implant for individuals experiencing an intolerance to contact lens and are facing a corneal transplant. Intacs corneal implants may be the best possible option to stabilize the cornea, improve vision and potentially defer the need for a corneal transplant. They are indicated for use in the correction of nearsightedness and astigmatism associated with keratoconus where contact lenses and glasses are no longer suitable.

CRYSTALENS HD™ RECEIVES FDA APPROVAL

Newest Version of the Only FDA Approved Accommodating Lens Designed to Further Improve Near Vision

Aliso Viejo, Ca. June 30, 2008—Bausch & Lomb announced today that it has received approval from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to market the Crystalens HD™ in the United States. Crystalens accommodating intraocular lens (IOL) was first approved by the FDA in November 2003. The Crystalens HD is the fourth generation of the only FDA approved accommodating lens.

The surface of the Crystalens HD has been shaped to enhance the depth of focus with a proprietary optical modification. The enhanced optic provides an increased depth of focus which is designed to improve near vision without compromising intermediate or distance vision. The HD lens does this without inducing increased undesirable dysphotopsia or night vision symptoms.

A total of 125 primary eyes were implanted with the Crystalens HD in patients who had a visually significant cataract, less than 1 diopter of corneal astigmatism, and the potential for best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) of 20/25 or better in both eyes. Of these patients, 80% reported vision at J2 or better at four (4) months.

“Extensive market research has clearly indicated that patients and surgeons alike are asking for a truly accommodating IOL as their choice of lens. With these results, where patients reported getting one more line of near vision, we are coming ever closer to meeting the desired need for an optic that does provide truly good near vision without compromising the quality of vision at intermediate or distance,” said Michael Judy, Chief Marketing Officer at Bausch & Lomb Surgical.

Dr. John Hovanesian was a Principal Investigator in the FDA study. Dr. Hovanesian serves as Clinical Instructor at the Jules Stein Eye Institute, UCLA in California and is in private practice at Harvard Eye Associates in Laguna Hills, California.

“If I were a patient having cataract surgery, I would want an IOL that projects a single point of focus and also provides a broad range of distance, intermediate and near vision. The Crystalens HD is the best available lens to achieve that goal,” said Dr. Hovanesian.
“There is no question that the HD will be my lens of choice for presbyopia correction in patients with cataracts.”

Bausch & Lomb officials said that surgeons will be instructed to continue to use the same surgical protocols for the Crystalens HD as they have used in the past. The Company has said that it will begin shipping the Crystalens HD the week of July 7th.

I havent mastered it yet, BUT I have to tell you that its a great tool for patients and their families....most family members have no clue what you CAN and CANNOT see....this program enables me to show them just that!

For example, a patient that is nearsighted (myopia) will see something like this without glasses or contacts and/or correction:

And a patient that is farsighted (hyperopia) sees something like this:

With my new program, I can simulate the actual prescription and change it to what the person will see after surgery!

Trust me, its wayyyyyyyyy cool!

Random Stuff and Information for ya!

Hellllooooo!
Gosh, its been a couple weeks since Ive posted! Busy Busy! But busy is GOOD!

Wanted to touch on a few things...this is pretty random, but hey....we all have random days uh!

So...first....I wanted to thank you all for visiting the Kelly Eye Center blog! Its great to know that you find it interesting enough to visit....some business blogs can be quite boring, but I hope thats not the case...I try to pep it up as much as possible! HAHAH! Also, thanks for your comments! I havent gotten many, but the few I have gotten are much appreciated! NOTE: If you want to respond anonymously, thats cool...but Id like to be able to communicate with you if there is a concern you may have, etc....so email or call me if you have any questions, etc that you may state in your post...Ill be glad to talk with ya!

Id also like to respond to one comment left by an anonymous poster on the ICL entry....

The comment: Sounds great !! [but then, why didn't I get this result?] I went from no glasses (prior to the procedures) to having to wear glasses after the procedures.

My rebuttal:

1) In order to have ICL surgery, you must have the need for glasses/contacts...ICL generally treats nearsightedness.
2) POST surgery---there is a possibility that if you are over 40, you may have the need for reading glasses...LASIK nor ICL stops the hands of time...as we age, our eyes change.
3) One may have astigmatism....this can be treated POST ICL with a quick laser procedure...the ICL doest NOT correct astigmatism, but we can correct it after or at the time of surgery.
Quick note on that---there is a new ICL coming our way called the TORIC ICL that does correct astigmatism....stay tuned :)

The latest buzz of LASIK

Im sure you have seen this in the news lately....

"The FDA is taking a closer look into LASIK and its possible risks"

What they have found is that the vast majority of people that undergo LASIK surgery benefit greatly and are extremely satisfied with their results. Now, like all surgeries, there is a small fraction of patients, less than 1%, that suffer life changing side effects. These side effects can range from worse vision, to glare, to inability to drive at night.

Lets talk about this for a bit....
There are several very important factors that an ophthalmologist must consider before qualifying an individual as a LASIK candidate. Among others, these include pupil size, corneal thickness, and dry eyes. When a patient is put through an extensive evaluation, the doctor will be able to determine if these factors will affect the patient post LASIK...it is up to the doctor and their team to decide what procedure is BEST for the patient....BEST being an end result that eliminates or reduces these life changing side effects if possible.

One conclusion of the FDA was to add clearer warning statements about the risks to LASIK brochures and websites...seems logical.

My favorite quotes from one of the articles is "LASIK is good, but just not good for everyone". Now I find that to be completely true....KEC (Kelly Eye Center) believes in educating our patients FIRST so they are aware of the complications associated with LASIK....however, we will not consider a patient as a candidate if they are in fact...NOT.

At KEC, we do extensive screenings and measurements that test for these possible complications....we are able to perform a thorough exam that is going to get the patient to their best corrected vision with little or no post surgery side effects....we are committed to providing our patients with the best quality of care and education.

One other thing I must mention....KEC is a complete center that is able to offer our patients alternatives to LASIK...we have the ICL for example, and other refractive procedures for those who may be weary of LASIK.....

Implantable contact lens...WHAT???

Thats right!

A contact lens that is permanently inserted into your eye to correct your vision! It seems like a no-brainer, but its a new (FDA approved in 2005) procedure that is infiltrating the eyes of patients all over the US...and its called the Visian ICL (Implantable Collamer Lens)!

Here is what it looks like.........

That is a magnified picture, but its quite small and matched to your prescription. It is then surgically inserted in the posterior chamber of your eye; which is behind the iris and in front of the eye's natural lens. The ICL does not touch any internal eye structures and it stays in place!

Kind of like this.....

Another great characteristic of the ICL is that it can be REMOVED (for whatever reason) leaving your cornea UNTOUCHED. Nothing in your eye is altered. If the ICL is removed, you will be at the same place as you started before the surgery....back to your original prescription! How cool is that?! If you arent happy with the results, it can be removed with no permanent changes to your eye!

Ok, some questions you may have..........

What is it made of?
Well, the ICL is made of Collamer--a soft, flexible lens material that contains a small amount of collagen which makes the lens extremely bio-compatible!

Is it safe?
The surgery is VERY SAFE and the product is as well.....The ICL is inserted into the eye by an ophthalmologist of course, but it is done through a mico incision. The lens unfolds in the eye and is positioned between the iris and the natural lens where it stays FOREVER...unless you want it removed of course...but you wont, trust me!!!

How long does the procedure take?
JUST 15 MINUTES! Yep, you got it...15 minutes and your life of dealing with contacts and glasses is OVER!!!! It is performed on an outpatient basis....you will be in a hospital setting, but for 15 minutes to change your life....thats not so bad!!!

Can it be felt within the eye?
NO! You cannot feel or see the ICL once it is inserted into the eye. You will be able to SEE, but not the ICL....your surroundings is all you will SEE....now doesnt that sound good!

Am I a candidate?
Well, first you would need to come in to the Kelly Eye Center and have a refractive evaluation to determine if this procedure is right for you....BUT if you have the need for corrected vision of any sort, the ICL may be an option for you. Most ICL patients are extremely nearsighted (myopia), but you may also be a candidate if you have thin corneas....to thin for LASIK. The ICL is a great option for NON-LASIK candidates.

What if I have dry eyes?
Thats OK! The ICL does not cause or contribute to dry eyes. The ICL requires NO maintenance...that means NO solution, NO rubbing, NO irritation....NO maintenance!

Ok...there is just some information that may help you but Im sure you are asking what everyone wants to know......What does it cost?

To be honest, the ICL is a bit more pricey than LASIK. Kelly Eye Center offers the ICL at $3,800 per eye. Dont freak out! Let me break it down for you....

This cost covers and includes the following:
The lens themselves (2x)
Hospital fees
Anesthesia (yes, you are under local anesthesia...you are not "out" but you are sedated)
The surgery
Pre-Op visits
Post-Op visits for 1 year
YOUR LIFE WILL BE CHANGED!

Now, thats not too bad when you think about it, right! 15 minutes and VOILA!!!! YOU CAN SEE without your glasses and/or contacts!!

Sharing a little MAGIC!

Hello there Kelly Eye Center Blog Visitors! Im glad you came by today b/c I have something great to share!!!

Last week I was in Chicago and attended a few training courses to better my knowledge of the Refractive World in Ophthalmology. Well, I was in for a surprise!

Id like to point you in the direction of GIOVANNI LIVERA http://www.giovanniexperiences.com/. Go ahead, check out his site!

Now, Im not easily convinced of anything, and I tend to be skeptical only for my own good, but this guy is truly AMAZING! Not only is he a REAL magician, but an excellent motivational speaker with spark you wouldnt believe! Through magical demonstrations and great tie-ins to life, business and magic....Giovanni's presence was all but boring!

Ive sat through many keynote speakers, many lectures, many power point presentations, but Giovanni really brought his message to life....LITERALLY!

But for the lack of a better statement, I have to say that Mr. Livera is one of a kind genius who will never cease to amaze you. He has the most positive and realistic outlook on life....his philosophy is....ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE!

Notice I said "Anything"....not EVERYTHING....and isnt that the truth! Through his message I learned allot about business and life. He inspired me to make changes both professionally and personally....slow changes, I must add! HA!

Let me elaborate and ramble a bit....shall I!

Giovanni said "One important thing in life is to WOW people....to ASTONISH them!" That is so true! Not only in life, but in business. There have been a select few occasions where I felt WOWed by someone whether it be a customer service representative or a waitress at my favorite restaurant. And what happened? I went back...over and over to be WOWed once again.

Being WOWed is hard to come by. People get lazy at their jobs, they get into a routine of the day to day duties and they forget the importance of their job itself. You arent employed b/c you arent needed! You are employed to WOW your customers....and not just one day....EVERYDAY!
